Breakfast: The Original Pancake House
I had a few weeks of vacation between my last day at CMU and my first day on the new Job, and I celebrated my last day of that time off by going out for Breakfast with Sally on not-a-Sunday (in this case, Wednesday). We figured that was a good time to hit up the Original Pancake House on McKnight Road. While not actually right in Pittsburgh, it’s just a 15 minute drive from Squirrel Hill. I had found it on the Internet at some point when Sally had a pancake craving, but we never got a chance to go…until now.
Overall, we liked it. The Original Pancake House is a national chain with a pretty useful web presense, so you can hit them up even outside of Pittsburgh. They serve pancakes as a side dish to just about everything on the Menu, so there was almost no way around giving them a try. Basically, you get pancakes where a normal breakfast menu would give you toast. They also had specialized pancake plates with all sorts of exciting toppings. Of course, there were also crepes and waffles for anyone wanting to step away from the restaurant’s namesake. They also had a stuffed crepe thing that I can’t find in their online menu—probably meaning it was specific to this location. Unfortunately, their portions were huge, and neither of us was exceptionally hungry.
After a great deal of browsing the menu and debating with myself, I went for an omlette with spinach, feta and sundried tomato. Don’t worry, it came with a side of buttermilk pancakes, so I still had a chance to give them a try. Sally got her usual English muffin with a over-medium egg along with some homefries (and again, pancakes). My omlette was exceptional: bursting with flavor but freakin’ enormous. I could only eat about half ot it, which just left a fantastic hunk of leftovers to use for starting off my first day of work. The pancakes were tasty, too. I couldn’t eat all of them, but they definitely had a unique and exciting flavor. Sally seemed to like her’s as well, though she didn’t think too highly of the home fries: they were made from overly large pieces of potato without enough overall crispiness or seasoning.
Basically, if you like pancakes, then I don’t think you could go wrong at the Original Pancake House. Just go ready to eat a lot (or take something home).
