    Breakfast: The Smallman Street Deli

This Sunday, Sally and I went to the Smallman Street Deli for our “weekly” breakfast outing. It’s actually been several weeks since we’ve gotten out (at least on Sunday morning), but you get the point. We ended up going to the Smallman Street Deli. There was some initial concern that it was closed on Sunday (as reported elsewhere on the internet), but it turns out they’re open from 8:00am to 9:00pm on Sundays. They serve breakfast until 2:00pm (which is good news: sometimes Sally takes—I mean, we take—a little while to get started).

Anyway, the food was, as expected, very tasty. I wasn’t all that hungry, so I ordered a fruit bowl, and that turned out to be really good. Sally got the Murray Ave. Breakfast Special (2 eggs, meat, homefries, toast, and coffee). She’s not a fant of breakfast meat and usually offers it to me. Normally, that’s not really an exciting prospect, but it turns out it can be quite exciting at the Smallman Street Deli. In addition to the usual bacon, sausage, or ham; you can get corned beef or pastrami. Sally got the corned beef for me, and it was fantastic (as you would expect for meat coming out of this place).

The funny story, though, is our patio co-inhabitant. We went there for dinner about a week earlier, and decided to eat out on the patio. There was only one other guy out there who was tooling away on his laptop and generally being loud and obnoxious. He was even trying to chat it up with the owner. On Sunday, the same guy was there and had set up shop again with his laptop. This time, he had a webcam and headset and was apparently participating in a video conference while he sat there (alone). He never seems to have any food—only coffee. What’s worse: this time he was trying to talk to every single passer-by to tell them about his techno-wizardry (the patio opens up to the Murray Ave sidewalk). That may be something to brag about for an old guy, but it kind of seemed like even the other old guys he dragged into the conversation were trying their best to break away and continue down the street. Oh well. It was a little annoying at first, but quickly grew to be entertaining.

Oh yeah, I went ahead and added the Smallman Street Deli to my running list of Pittsburgh breakfast favorites.
